Department of Finance and Sustainable Nation Ireland host webinar on sustainable finance

The Department of Finance led by Minister Paschal Donohoe and Sustainable Nation Ireland (SNI) are organising a special webinar on sustainable finance, taking place this Wednesday 10th June.

The webinar is called ‘Perspectives on the Renewed Strategy for Sustainable Finance’ and will feature an update from the European Union’s dedicated Department for Financial Stability and Capital Markets (DG FISMA).

The June 10 session will also bring together key industry stakeholders including the former President of the European Parliament Pat Cox, Colin Hunt (CEO AIB) and Patrick Burke (MD Irish Life Investment Managers).

The Department and SNI will highlight leadership activities in developing Ireland as a top-tier financial centre for sustainable finance and the unique attributes at the core of that proposition.  During the session, an update on DG FISMA activities will be provided by Martin Spolc, the Head of Sustainable Finance, DG FISMA, which is responsible for the EU Commission’s policies on banking and finance.

The Sustainable Finance agenda is a horizontal priority for the Ireland for Finance strategy and featured strongly in the annual action plans of the preceding IFS2020 strategy.

The Department and SNI are taking this initiative in response to the demand from industry stakeholders for direction in how they execute the sustainable finance agenda for their own organisations.

The event comes at a time when the State and EU are poised to play a critical role in an unprecedented reallocation of capital towards financing the European Green Deal and transitioning to a sustainable economy.

As part of the European Green Deal, DG FISMA has announced that it is working on a Renewed Sustainable Finance Strategy. A consultation is underway with a closing date of 15 July 2020. The consultation is a comprehensive and wide-ranging document that focuses on three areas:

  1. Creating an enabling framework for sustainable investments that focuses on long term objectives.
  2. Increased opportunities for financing the green transition.
  3. Managing the climate and environmental risks will need to be fully managed by integrating them into the financial system as a whole.

The agenda for the event will include a discussion of the consultation and the Commission plans for the European Green Deal and how it will form a part of the COVID recovery plan.
